As sad as this may sound the advice we got to help my mother with her Alzheimer's was to take an photo album to the rest home to awaken lost memories. Cruising through an old album, and one picture can carry you to an unexpected place, momentary and fleeting glimpses, they can conjure up a childhood summer beside a lake in the mountains; a first kiss; a moonlit walk on a beach; your wedding day, your graduation. Pictures detonate softly in our minds, like poignant land mines hidden under the weedy mass of years. Hit the tripwire of a picture and memories explode all at once. A complex vision leaps out of the undergrowth of the past.
All our lives we are engaged in preserving our experiences and keeping them fresh by artificially sprinkling the water of memory over them. They have ceased to retain their original smell and fragrance. Do you call it life— this effort at the preservation of a phantom freshness in something that is withered and gone?
But with a picture or a collection of pictures we can bring that moment or person back to life, to live that experience once again to achieve joy or sorrow.
Ahhh...the temptation... the need.
